Layna's Surgery

Layna Bayna had her surgery yesterday afternoon (Friday March 26). It went very well. They took her "away" from us around 2 but didn't start until 3 and came out around 4 30. She was a little sleepy baby when we saw her in the recovery room. After an hour in the recovery, we headed up to her room. She ate 8-10 ounces of Pedialyte and finally fell asleep. A little later she had some formula finally.

Layna was a trooper. She only fussed a tiny bit. During the night after the surgery Layna got pain medicine and when the morning came, she just got Infant Tylonel and did great on that. It seems like it doesn't even phase her. Throughout the day she was smiling and awake. Layna's incision it below her "bikini" line and the whole where the urine leaks out (where the ureter was implanted to the skin) is at the end of the incision. Hopefully she will heal quickly and be pain-free in a few days.

Layna is Developing and Growing Right on Track !

Today is a very nice day. It is supposed to get up to high 50's (about 60*). We are planning on going to Colt State park in Rhode Island for a nice long walk and enjoy the weather as a family finally. Daddy was working all last week when the weather was nice.

Layna is becoming a very active girl nowadays No, she isn't crawling yet haha. However, she is very alert and wiggles a lot. She is always looking around the room and watching people move around the room. She squeals and squeaks a lot. Mommy is very proud of Layna and the rate she is growing/developing. She seems to be right on track ! Her noises include vowels sounds along with constant sounds. Because Layna is getting big and does move a lot, it was time for her to take baths in the baby tub. When Layna gets fussy and there is nothing she can do to calm her, Layna gets a bath! she loves it - unless she is super hungy - and calms down right away. She kicks and wiggles and smiles during the bath. Mommy can't wait until she can play in it ! If Layna is propped up on a blankets or on the couch, she tries to sit up all by herself. She is getting SO strong ! And when laying on her back she is starting to roll onto her left side but hasn't fully rolled over yet.

Layna's faces are too cute. She sticks out her tongue now and sometimes pulls at it along with biting her lower lip. When she wants something now she makes that razzing sound. Sometimes she does it to play and sometimes it's when she is getting grumpy and wants to something.

Tomorrow is Layna's surgery. It is scheduled at 1 in the afternoon. She can get formula until 5 oclock in the morning and any clear liquids until 9 in the morning. Since Layna is still eating every 3 hours, this is going to be an experience for us when 12 oclock rolls around, if the pediatrician gives us the ok for the clear liquids.

GOODLUCK, Layna Bayna !
Mommy and Daddy love you !

Beautiful Spring Day

It was 68* today ! Beautiful out and Mommy and Layna went for a walk around the neighborhood! The sun was in Layna's eyes a little but she didn't seem to mind. Layna has been so much more active. Staying up more during the day. Her schedule is a little messed up. She will take an hour long nap around 10 - 11 and then stay up until 1 or 2, and then go back to bed until 11 in the morning. We have to try to fix that.

We were supposed to go to Syracuse to see Mommy's family, but we had to cancel. Hopefully sometime in April we can make a trip out. Aunt Rose, Cousin Connor, and Layna's Great Aunt, are coming to Massachusetts for Easter. Next Friday is Layna's surgery.

Mommy got Layna a keyboard that she kicks at and it lights up and plays music - She loves it ! Her little legs go go go! and she loves seeing it light up. Also, Layna is getting SO big that Mommy has changed her bath time. Instead of showering in the bath seat, it was time to start using the infant bath tub. Layna didn't mind it the first time. She felt like she was falling - her arms would flail out - but the second time she kept kicking and didn't know what to think of the water surrounding her. She was looking at Mommy to explain to her and tell her it's okay. Layna tries to sit up now. Sometimes when she is sitting back lounged up, you can see her trying to "pull" herself up. However, next Friday she won't be able to use her little muscles.  :-(

Because Layna is growing like any other baby, it was time to take away her Napper that she slept in. It kept her warm and cozy and in a ball like she was being held. She doesn't really like sleeping flat and Mommy uses blankets to try to give the same effect as the Napper, but it doesn't work as great as Mommy would like. Layna just has to get used to it.

Almost Three Months Old Already !

Last weekend, Mommy, Daddy and Layna made a day trip up to see Grandma and Grandpa Robidoux. She was smiley and a good baby... like always...

Layna is almost three months and Mommy couldn't wait til next week to take some more "professional" photos of the little princess ! She is doing great on her belly and sometimes looks like she wants to move and grab her toys ! Today Mommy put a rattle in Layna's little fingers and she held on to it and tried to shake it but it's a little big for her ... but she held on ! She is more smiley than ever ! When Mommy and Daddy hear her little gurgles and coos from the crib in the morning, the minute they say hello, Layna has big smiles on and gets super excited - her legs kick every where ! She is getting big for her Napper and it's time to try to get her to sleep flat now, but it's going to be a challenge. Mommy has put her down flat when Layna is asleep but she wakes up within 5 minutes.

Mommy will blow bubbles/make that razzing sound with her lips and Layna will sometimes mimick her and blow bubbles too. It's so cute !

Layna made a trip to UMass with Mommy because Mommy had to meet with a couple professors. Every one loved her and she was on her best behavior !

we she's gonna be a thumb-sucker !

The news about Layna's "kidney problem"

After tests after tests to figure out what the problem is with her urinary track, Dr Ellsworth has come up with a temporary solution. There are a few characteristics of the right kidney's ureter: 1) the obstruction of the ureter is close to the bladder, 2) the ureter connects low to the bladder and 3) the ureter is swollen and really thick, which the doctor describes as a sausage. First thing that could be done is to replant the sausage-sized ureter into the bladder, but because it's so big and Layna (and her kidney) is so small  the operation is high-risk. The doctor would have to make the ureter smaller and then replant it into the kidney, which would have a lot of scar tissue and effect the way it heals and probably prohibit the kidney from working. So, the second choice is to get rid of the kidney and ureter because it only is working 16%. However, the doctor met with her colleague, who suggested doing a ureterostomy, which is an opening from the ureter to the skin allowing urine to pass. Usually they put a bag on the opening, but the doctor said she'll do it low enough so it will empty right into her diaper. In doing this, we will see if the kidney will work more. We will repeat the scan to see if the kidney works or not. If it does, we will replant the ureter in the bladder when Layna is bigger (probably a year or older). If it doesn't work, we will remove her kidney.

Layna's First Playdate

Layna had her first playdate on Sunday with Baby Aislyn and Mommy Kaitlin! Mommy was so proud of Layna and how well she behaved. She had one stinky dirty diaper, which Mommy made a mess on Aislyn's changing pad. Also, Layna only cried when she was very tired, but Mommy carried her around and got her to fall asleep within 5 minutes. Aislyn slept the whole time. Her daddy was trying to wake her up but nothing did it; she slept right through the playdate ! When it was time to go home Aislyn decided it was time to wake up. She smiled at Mommy when Layna and her said their goodbyes. Aislyn is about 1 month younger than Layna and looks tiny compare to Layna.

Layna is getting SO strong these days ! She can hold her head up so well when sitting up, and she is starting to sit up and use her core muscles. She'll hold your fingers with your help and hold her head up when pull her up to sit up. Mommy put Layna in her Bumbo chair and Layna seemed to like it even though her head was boppy everywhere a little.
